Perched on Mount Benacantil high above Alicante's coastline, this medieval fortress has one of the largest castles in Spain with views stretching across the Mediterranean.

The castle dates to the 9th century Moorish period but the current structure is largely from the 13th–16th centuries. The 166m elevation makes it visible from everywhere in Alicante. A lift tunnel carved through the rock takes visitors straight up from Postiguet beach.
