This medieval church spire leans and twists so dramatically that it looks like it was designed by a fever dream — but it was actually caused by unseasoned timber and lead weight.

The spire of the Church of St Mary and All Saints twists 45 degrees and leans 2.9m from its true centre. The most likely cause is that green timber was used which warped as it dried under the heavy lead cladding. Local legend blames the Devil, who sneezed as he flew over Derbyshire.
