This vermillion three-storey pagoda stands at one of Japan's most celebrated Buddhist temples, overlooking Kyoto from a hillside above a sacred waterfall.
Kiyomizu-dera ("Pure Water Temple") was founded in 778. The current pagoda dates to 1633. The temple's famous wooden stage juts out over the hillside on 13m pillars — built entirely without nails. The Japanese expression "jumping off the stage at Kiyomizu" means taking the plunge.
