For nearly 30 years these identical twin towers defined the New York skyline. At the time of completion they were the tallest buildings in the world.
Designed by Minoru Yamasaki and completed in 1973, the North Tower stood 417m and the South Tower 415m. They were the tallest buildings in the world until the Sears Tower surpassed them in 1974. On September 11, 2001, both towers were destroyed in a terrorist attack that killed 2,977 people. The site is now home to the 9/11 Memorial and One World Trade Center.
