Built for an Olympics that war delayed by over a decade, this slender white tower finally welcomed the world's athletes in 1952.

The stadium and tower were ready for the 1940 Olympics, which were cancelled due to World War II. At 72m, the tower's height honors Finnish javelin legend Matti Jarvinen, whose best throw measured nearly the same distance.
