Visible from nearly every corner of the Red City, this sandstone minaret set the architectural template for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat.

The Almohad caliph ordered that no building in Marrakech could stand taller than this minaret. Its four copper orbs atop the spire are said to have been made from the melted-down jewelry of the caliph's wife.
