One of the oldest standing minarets in the Islamic world rises above a mosque that has been a center of learning and worship in North Africa for over a thousand years.

The three-tiered square minaret dates to 836 AD and influenced mosque architecture across the entire Maghreb region. Kairouan's Great Mosque is considered the fourth holiest site in Islam by many North African Muslims.
