Rising from tidal flats off the Normandy coast, this abbey perched on a rocky island becomes completely surrounded by the sea during the highest tides.

Benedictine monks began building atop the granite outcrop in 966 and construction continued for centuries. The abbey's spire reaches 80m above sea level, crowned by a golden statue of the Archangel Michael.
